  • Great place to come and worship, great services with a contemporary service and a traditional service

  • My wife and I started attending First Evan several years ago. We were married in the church and have been members for a couple of years.

Of utmost importance to us was finding a church we would feel blessed to raise a family in. The church has excellent children's programs and is full of excellent (healthy) families. This isn't to say that people are perfect, or close to it, but rather that there are Godly role models present.

The expectation of excellent preaching is a must. I'm not sure if the pastor has the gift of preaching over teaching, or a healthy dose of both. The sermons are consistently good. I am impressed with the consistent quality. Pastor Huffman very rarely preaches topically. I would say that 80% of the sermons are expository with the remainder split between biographical and topical sermons.

There are three services: Two contemporary and one traditional. The pastor runs between the three sermons, which is no doubt why the church hired a pastor who jogs. The quality of music is excellent in all services. At special times of the year (Christmas, Palm Sunday, Easter) the Traditional Service goes an extra mile and has quite elaborate productions that are abased around a scriptural theme. Pastor Man does an excellent job with these.

The church makes an effort to overcome the racial tension that Memphis is known for. A Sudanese Church uses the facilities and conducts a service in Arabic. An annual "Meet Memphis" day brings ministry opportunities for members, and many members then work with faith based non-profits throughout the week.

Ultimately, First Evan is a Bible Based Church. As long as it continues to hold to scripture as the infallible, authoritative rule of faith and conduct, we will continue our time with the church!

My friends and I playing basketball there outside since 2008 which I think is cool considering its private property. The people are sort of nice in a way to let us play but the problem i have is one hot summer day I went into the church to get some water an ran into one of the pastors. We talked an he admired how we'd show up almost every sunday to play basketball in the heat or sometimes in the rain. He mentioned they had a indoor court for $5 an we should check it out so i did. For a week everything was nice when i joined for $5 until a lady pulled me off the court gave me my money back an said I couldn't play here. I thought it was a little bit racist but I didnt say anything because they have so many pastors an i forgot his name. We're still grateful for them letting us play outside an respect there rules but i think its kinda of messed up that happened at a place of worship

  • In response to the gentleman who visited FEC and wrote the review re: his impressions, I have been a member of FEC since I was in Middle School, was married there, and am commissioned as a worker sent out to the foreign field from there. You will hardly find a church in Memphis that strives to overcome the racial barriers better than FEC. Once a pastor found the old notes taken from a congregational meeting in the 1960's. They indicated that should an African-American (not the terminology used back then) visit FEC, he/she should be escorted to the front row. They were breaking the mold even back during segregation. The Sudanese refugees who found FEC years ago have been welcomed with open arms and given a place in every aspect of the life of the church. Additionally, FEC has supported inner city ministries like Streets and Neighborhood Christian Center and partnered to send work teams for decades (even back in the 1980's when I helped with this as a teen). So, perhaps you didn't see any African-Americans the day you visited, but I personally would welcome, on behalf of FEC, any and every African-American brother/sister to share fellowship at FEC. And I am certain the members feel exactly the same way. I work in a school which hosts 59 nationalities. I know if any of these families were ever sent to the Memphis region, I could without reservation direct them to the family of FirstEvan. Respectfully, Sara Campbell

I had a nice greeting and hand shake when I waked in. Although it is really one church, there are two distinct congregations. Down stairs on the north end in the Gym, you've got the contemporary service: casual attire, contemporary worship service, younger crowd, and a coffee bar. The worship band was disappointing, not due to lack of talent and certainly not due to the lack of equipment, but I don't think the sound reinforcement was ever set up properly. Upstairs, the traditional service was more than 1/2 empty, mostly the retired generation, and all suits and ties. The choir was good, organ was great, but the choir wasn't miked nearly enough. The biggest thing that stood out to me: of the several hundred people in the traditional service, there were NO, NADA, NONE, ZERO black folks there, and almost no other minorities either. Made me wonder how accepting these folks are. The contemporary service was better balanced, but in my opinion, this church did not appear to escape the curse of Memphis: Racism. That said, the preaching was biblical, relevant, and enjoyable. The pastor that spoke was a Dallas Theological grad.
